Columbia Falls High School Senior Mentee Blog Post

Guest blog post by: Cloey Ramage

I grew up a ‘river rat’.  My parents hauled me downstream in river boats and rafts since before I could even walk. In the winter I would count the days until I can hit the water in either a raft, boat, paddleboard, or tube. The rivers are not only a blast, but also a way my family and friends come together for an escape and an adventure.  As a senior at Columbia Falls High School I was tasked with tackling a senior project. This coincidentally came at a time, where river water levels were receding and all of the garbage and debris along the river banks came into full and horrifying view. I knew I wanted to further my knowledge and dedicate my senior project to our local Flathead River Management.  So, I reached out to Flathead River Alliance and spoke with Sheena. She connected me with others, granting me an array of resources including the Hungry Horse Reservoir (Bureau of Reclamation).  I was awarded the amazing privilege of being the first private citizen since September 11, 2001 to have a detailed tour of our Hungry Horse Dam.

I learned in intricate detail how it generates power, and helps moderate flooding. It was an amazing experience. Shortly after my tour, I had a Zoom meeting with the River Design Group. I had a brief Q&A about college, career opportunities and what it is like working for a team like River Design Group.

All the while, Sheena remained my dedicated advisor with monthly meetings where we would discuss future goals and opportunities for me to explore for my senior project continuing through college and ‘adulthood.’ I plan to attend Montana State University in the Fall pursuing a degree in Engineering, and continuing my dedication to our local river systems.
