Job Announcement: Volunteer Coordinator
Title: Volunteer Coordinator for the Flathead Rivers Alliance (FRA)
Classification: Part-time, Exempt *Technology + Health Stipend Provided
Reports to: Executive Director
Salary: Hourly $25.00, April-October
Location: Remote & Field-based Flathead Wild & Scenic River, Montana; The Volunteer Coordinator is expected to regularly engage with staff, key partners and volunteers. *Refer to Position Requirements below.
Position Summary: The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, tracking and supervising FRA’s stewardship and citizen science volunteer opportunities. Working closely with Forest and Park Service and MT FWP partners, volunteers, river partners, and packers, this position will coordinate logistics to get FRA’s volunteers safely in and off the North, South and Middle Forks of the Flathead River, both vehicle access points and Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. This is primarily a field-based position with volunteer leadership required, with some office time (70% field, 30% office).
Duties and Responsibilities
Act as a liaison between the US Forest Service, National Park Service and MT FWP as needed for each program
Assist in recruiting volunteers through outreach
Lead and/or assist with volunteer program trainings (April-June)
Coordinate approximately 300 volunteers for river cleanups (walking access points & floating) and River Ambassador (river access points), River Recreation/Citizen Science (floating) and Water Quality Monitoring (river access points & floating) volunteer programs (April-September)
Communicate with volunteers via weekly volunteer program specific email and answer volunteer questions as needed via email and/or phone
Assist Noxious Weed Volunteer Coordinator as needed for annual River Weed Pull Rodeo and MCC Youth Crew
In coordination with the Executive Director, plan details for 2-5+ backcountry River Ambassador trips
In coordination with the Executive Director track and collect data collected by volunteers and self and assist with compiling results for reporting
Ensure volunteers have completed appropriate paperwork, trainings and are following protocols for communication with public and data collection methods
In coordination with Executive Director ensure proper procedures are followed for water quality sample collection and shipment of samples to lab
Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements and Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Communications, or a related field
● Minimum of 2 years experience in a volunteer coordinator or similar roles
● Proven track record managing successful volunteer programs
● Excellent organizational and time-management skills
● Able to work independently and as part of a team
● Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
● Proficiency in Microsoft Office and volunteer management software
About the Flathead Rivers Alliance
Formed in 2019, the Flathead Rivers Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the Flathead River System. As the only friends group for the two administrative agencies for the river system, it is our goal to extend the agencies capacity to administer the Comprehensive River Management Plan for the nationally designated Wild & Scenic River and uphold the remarkable and outstanding values of the river system. Through education, stewardship and outreach we empower active community and stakeholders, we work alongside our partners to maintain the health of the Flathead River watersheds and mitigate human impacts, as well as to ensure access and enjoyment for all users. The Spotted Bear Ranger District, Hungry Horse Ranger District, Glacier View Ranger District within the Flathead National Forest, Glacier National Park and British Columbia-SE Kootenay are home of the three forks of the Flathead River. FRA works on the traditional homelands of the the Séliš, Qlispé and Ktunaxa the longest-serving stewards of the river system. The river system has been traditionally frequented by Amskapi Piikani.
Each summer, Flathead Rivers Alliance hosts 300+ volunteers of all ages equating 1,750+ volunteer hours annually across a range of programs including, River Ambassador, River Recreation/Citizen Scientist, water quality monitoring, river invasive weed pulls, river cleanups, and river access improvement projects. Our work includes a multitude of year-round dynamic programs, events and projects. We believe in getting our hands wet, working alongside our partners and instilling stewardship into everyone we meet with a lead-by-example we’ll-jump-first mindset. Through education and outreach we seek to provide the tools and access to knowledge that fosters an environment of self-teaching and pride in the river. Desired Skills, Experience and Background Qualifications may be met by any combination of education and experience that provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed in the job description. The ideal Volunteer Coordinator candidate will possess the following skills and experience:
● Knowledge and experience with programs related or similar to the Flathead Rivers Alliance’s mission, vision, goals, and objectives
● Familiarity with the Three Forks of the Flathead River system
● Comfortable being in and around rivers
● Experience working closely with or within a government agency, outdoor program, or non-profit organization
● Volunteer management experience
● Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office and Excel, Google Drive, and volunteer management software
Position Requirements
Position is based on the North, South, and Middle Forks of the Flathead River, Montana. Travel and weekend availability is required (May-September). Hours will vary with duties of this seasonal position. Expect a flexible work week with some Saturdays required to train volunteers and attend outreach events (April, May, mid-September and October) (~25 hrs/week). The Executive Director will work with the Volunteer Coordinator on setting flex work week schedule. Expect work week to shift to Thursday-Sunday (~30 hrs/week) June-September, river conditions dependent. During the height of season and location of field-based work there may be an occasional week with compensation at a rate of one and a half times regular hourly rate for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Use of your personal vehicle will be necessary with mileage reimbursement at the federal annual rate. Required to attend Water Quality Volunteer Monitoring Training Wednesday, May 14th to Friday, May 16th at Flathead Lake Bio Station. Additional river-related training(s) will be provided to the Volunteer Coordinator based on availability. Staff training expenses covered by FRA.

Term: One Year
Position Summary: Flathead Rivers Alliance Board of Directors is the governing body, overseeing vision, mission, and internal operations of the organization. Flathead Rivers Alliance Board members are elected to serve a staggered term of either two and three years; and shall serve until his/her successor is elected. Board members hold overall fiscal and managerial oversight responsibility for Flathead Rivers Alliance. They are charged with the supervision and oversight of Flathead Rivers Alliance mission. They are responsible for making decisions, delegating work, and assuring decisions are carried out in the manner intended. Ultimately, board members serve as ambassadors for Flathead Rivers Alliance mission, inside and outside of organizational commitments.
