This iconic 219 mile designated Wild & Scenic River system offers endless adventures, in Glacier Country. The North, Middle, and South Forks have different origins and personalities, until they merge to form the main stem of the Flathead River. Designated in 1976 as a Wild and Scenic River, Three Forks of the Flathead encompasses the North Fork of the Flathead from the Canadian border to its confluence with the Middle Fork, the entire Middle Fork, and the South Fork from its headwaters to Hungry Horse Reservoir. A total of 219 miles of the Flathead River are included in the designation with much of it bordered by Flathead National Forest and Glacier National Park. Flathead National Forest and Glacier National Park cooperatively manage the river corridor and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks retains responsibilities for fishing and hunting regulations under state laws. The river system flows through the traditional homelands of the Ktunaxa, Kootenai and Séliš (Salish) Peoples.
